Strain Integrity
According to Leafly, ” A sativa-dominant hybrid of Lemon Skunk and Super Silver Haze and two time Cannabis Cup winner from Green House Seeds. Super Lemon Haze is a kief-caked multi-colored wonder. As the name states this strain has real lemony characteristics. The smell is zesty, citrusy, and a little sweet. As for the taste, it’s everything one would expect from the namesake; tart and sweet like lemonheads candy – not quite as sharp as one might expect. The effects are uniquely energetic and lively, may not be the best strain for those of us that are naturally wound-up tight.”
According to the OCS website, ” DT81 by RIFF has high THC potency potential and its greenhouse-grown dried bud is hand-groomed in Leamington, Ontario. RIFF expertly grows and cures all its dried flower to deliver quality flavour and smoothness. This sativa-dominant strain has frosty green buds with burnt orange hairs. DT81 has a balance of native terpenes including terpinolene, caryophyllene, humulene, and beta-pinene. This flavourful strain has citrusy, tart and sweet notes. ”
We are not 100% sure DT81 is Super Lemon Haze as identified by the reddit community. We really don’t understand why LPs obfuscate the genetic linage.
Oh la la … where have you been all my life?
At 21.86% THC, RIFF’s DT81 aka Super Lemon Haze (dated 2019-7-10) has a significant lead over Broken Coast’s Texada aka Super Lemon Haze at 14.5% (dated 2019-05-30). Don’t let anyone tell you THC level doesn’t matter. In this case, it was night and day.
DT81 has a floral citrus scent and is fluffy and sparkly. The taste is flavourful with just a hint of harshness. While this is not a creeper, it is not an express train either. At the end of the joint, you should feel a lightness of mind and increasing clarity and focus as you would with a cup of coffee. At the end of 10 minutes, you can feel your mind accelerating in thoughts and the energy level is uplifting … your head is on right and you are focus. When you hit the 15 minute mark, your train is gone. It has left the station and your are mesmerized by everything in front of you.
The high is very clear and cerebral. There is a clear focus and creativity is intense. This is where the effects are not as expected. Leafly describes a long lasting body high but the body relaxation effects are limited. This is all about wake and bake. The high last a solid two hours. The decline is not really noticeable until the 80 to 90 min mark, which is amazing.
We have tried Broken Coast’s Texada and RIFF’s rendition is superior. The effects feel twice as strong. Broken Coast’s Texada has similar effects but weaker in intensity and lower on the creative expressions. And to blow us away, this is grown in Ontario not the west coast. WOW.
Conclusion
DT81 (Super Lemon Haze) by RIFF
We are fans of RIFF. We actually tried Subway Scientist (Granddaddy Purple) December 2018 and it blew us away. Unfortunately, we did not have enough for a review as we only managed to purchase 1 gram. While keeping an eye out for Subway Scientist, we found DT81 and it bought us to this review.
Producing a product that beats Broken Coast deserves attention. Broken Coast and RIFF are owned by Aphria so is Solei and Good Supply. We are getting a sense the Aphria portfolio is producing some good values. Good Supply’s Jean Guy is an amazing product for the price and competes head on against WEEDMD, one of our favourite pure plays. Our begrudging respect for Aphria is increasing.
THC: 21.86%
Quality: 8.4
Intensity: 8.4
Duration: 8.3
Total: 8.4
Cost: $33.45 for 3.5 grams
We are big fans of RIFF’s pricing. The product competes well against the best producers at a price well below the high end price points. This has created a huge cognitive dissonance within us. We are starting to like Aphria. Good products and good pricing …
